“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” — Mahatma Gandhi
It’s been a little while since my first post. School has kept me insanely busy, but I am finally home for Thanksgiving break!
Aside from endless amounts of organic chemistry, I have also been kept busy by volunteering. I volunteer once a week for a couple of hours at a children’s hospital near my school. My volunteer work is done under Child Life, which is an awesome profession. Child life specialists help children (and parents) cope with being sick in the hospital. They do activities with the children, help explain medical procedures in terms kids can understand and provide support to the families. My job as a volunteer is to keep the kids smiling. We do a lot of activities, like playing games, coloring, painting, ect. Yesterday, we painted! I love doing arts and crafts with them. It’s so relaxing after a long week of school.
Spending time with these kids has been humbling for me. I find it so amazing to watch how resilient they are. Even while sick, they still want to be kids and play and laugh. A couple of weeks ago I hung out with a little girl who got her foot caught under a lawn mower. I think we can all imagine how painful this must have been, but she still wanted to play! She wasn’t allowed to put any pressure on her foot, so when we got to the playroom, she happily hopped around on one leg to move from toy to toy. I was in awe, considering she had just had surgery that morning. She acted like it was only a small inconvenience.
Spending time with these kids is the highlight of my week. It helps put things into perspective when I think I’ve had a tough week and it has helped me grow in ways I can’t even explain.
Do you guys volunteer? If so, where? What is your favorite part about it?
